We Are Taking A Closer Look, Thanks To The Microscope Depot!

I remember my very first microscope. Taking it from the box, I was overjoyed that I had been given such an amazing gift, and the opportunity to see things on an entirely different level. Preparing those first slides, that Christmas long ago, I uncovered a fascinating new world. When I decided to search for the highest quality back-to-school products that I could find, one of the first products that came to mind was a microscope.
If you are looking for a microscope that will carry your child from grade school and into college, you should definitely check out the The Microscope Depot. I am not an expert on microscopes, but I do know that quality is important. Knowledgeable online support is also the key to making the best purchase for your needs. We received the O Series Microscope with optional mechanical stage, accessory kit, and a beginner's set of prepared slides in exchange for this review. When I discovered The Microscope Depot, I was pleased with the selection of microscopes. They offer an entry level M Series that will prove itself superior to other beginner microscopes. For $30 more, pick up the O Series, which offers larger DIN compatible objectives. Any DIN objective from another microscope can be used with it. Best of all, it has fine focus where the M does not. This makes it much easier to keep a specimen in focus at the 400x level where most viewing is done. The O Series features:
Real optical glass lenses
Magnification from 40X to 400X
Coaxial fine and coarse focusing
Graduated Mechanical Stage (model O-01217)
10X Widefield eyepiece with pointer
Three DIN objectives: 4X, 10X, 40XR
45 inclined Monocular head, 360 degrees rotatable
Rotatable nosepiece with positive click stops
4 1/2" x 4 1/2" (110 x 120 mm) metal stage with clips
5 hole disc diaphragm
Built-in illuminator base with either 115V 20W tungsten, LED rechargeable, or 115V Fluorescent lamp!
UL approved 3 wire power cord
All metal frame with durable enamel finish
Vinyl dust cover and replacement bulb.
Optional Microscope Carrying Case
Five year limited warranty
Overall size: 5" x 7" x 12 1/2": 4 ½ lbs.
The microscope is very sturdy and I found it very easy to use. Plugging it in to a standard outlet, I placed one of the prepared slides on the stage. This was my first experience with a mechanical stage and I think it is a wonderful feature! I was able to move the slide smoothly with the turn of a knob. Without it, your specimen can dart out of view, which is very aggravating when you are viewing a specimen under higher magnification. I also loved the pointer. It is essential when you are teaching! While I was looking at a specimen, I was able to point to a section and teach my six year old what he was looking at, while he was peering through the microscope for the first time. Without it, he might have been completely lost. The experience for him was very rewarding. The look in his eyes was priceless. With my first microscope, one of my complaints was the lack of adequate light. The O Series Fluorescent bulb remained cool and provided more than enough illumination. Very impressive. The optional accessory kit includes:
12 plain slides
2 Concavity slides
Cover glass
Scalpel
Plastic dropper
Plastic slide storage box
Directions and helpful hints
We also received "ADVENTURES WITH A MICROSCOPE." This book was a helpful companion and I recommend it to homeschooling families and also anyone starting out. I did skip over a few pages (some parts are a little slow and VERY detailed) but overall it is a great source of knowledge. It provides detailed instructions for many microscope adventures, and I had fun following the suggestions. It is a great introduction to the microscopic world and I enjoyed looking over the pages!
The Microscope Depot offers a variety of microscope bundles to fit your budget. Go all out and include a digital camera, and upload images to your computer. The O Series with many lab quality features is a perfect choice for homeschooling families and it is built to last. The O Series would make a perfect birthday, graduation, or Christmas/Holiday gift! Give a gift that makes a lasting impression. Inspire your loved ones to discover life on a microscopic level and visit The Microscope Depot.

Prang Is Painting A Different Picture!

There are some scents I will never forget. Cookies baking in the oven, play doh, and a brand new box of crayons. I get warm and fuzzy when I smell these scents of my past. After discovering Prang, I had mixed emotions! I grew up with one brand, and I remember my first big box of crayons. Would Prang be as memorable for my kids? After receiving a box of their crayons, I was as eager as Logan to try them out. Opening the box, I inhaled deeply. The scent is not the same, but it has a lot of potential for becoming a favorite. I didn't like it more, and I didn't like it any less than the scents from my youth. Next, I noticed that these crayons were made with soy! Ah ha! The next generation of crayons, and Prang is leading the way! I was excited about this, but still skeptical that they would perform as well as the competitors. Putting crayon to paper, I was not let down. The rich colors glided across the paper, much more smoothly than any other crayon that I have tried. Blending seamlessly, the color seemed richer and more vivid. Next, I tried their Watercolors. My experience with watercolors is severely limited. I have experience with those flimsy sets sold next to coloring books. Some activity books that we have purchased have also come with their own sets of watercolors. I really did not know what to expect with the set from Prang. After opening the box, I first noticed that the oval pans of paint were easily removed and refillable! This is cool! Placing my finger on each pan of paint, I left a fingerprint. This is so different from the dry watercolors that I am used to!Using a small amount of water, I quickly realized what I had been missing. These paints are bright and the colors are intense. I always thought watercolors were watered down in appearance, but this experience has transformed my thinking. The next time you are out picking up art supplies, give Prang a try!

Celebrate History And The Universe With FirstScope!

Today marks the anniversary of Galileo's telescope. 400 years ago today, on 25 August 1609, the Italian astronomer and philosopher Galilei Galileo showed Venetian merchants his new creation, a simple telescope. This simple scope marked the beginning, and many scopes followed. The creation of telescopes led to many remarkable discoveries. The telescope brought Galileo scientific immortality.
To honor Galileo and all the influential star-gazing men and women that came after, Celestron created FirstScope. These men and women and all their discoveries helped shape our view of the universe. FirstScope was named Official Product of International Year of Astronomy 2009 and it is a wonderful keepsake. FirstScope will be appreciated by both novice and long-time enthusiasts. The high quality Dobsonian style stand with a 76 mm reflector optical tube make FirstScope an ideal entry level astronomical telescope .
Here are the SPECIFICATIONS:
OPTICAL DESIGN: Dobsonian ReflectorAPERTURE: 76 mm (2.99 in)FOCAL LENGTH: 300 mm (11.81 in)FOCAL RATIO: 3.95EYEPIECE 1: 20 mm (0.79 in)MAGNIFICATION 1: 15 xEYEPIECE 2: 4 mm (0.16 in)MAGNIFICATION 2: 75 xWEIGHT: 69 oz (1956.12 g)
The accessory kit can be purchased separately. It includes:
* 12.5 mm Eyepiece – 1.25" – Increases the power to 24x which makes it easier to find and observe some objects that require more magnification. * 6 mm Eyepiece – 1.25" – This eyepiece increases the power to 50x which boosts the magnification up higher to see more detail of faint objects. * Moon Filter – 1.25" – A moon filter reduces the brightness of the moon and improves contrast so that greater detail can be observed on the lunar surface. The filter has threads on it which screw into the bottom of the eyepieces. * 5x24 Finderscope & bracket – This finderscope with bracket will make it easier to locate astronomical objects with the FirstScope telescope because of its much wider field of view and low magnification. Installation is simple with no tools necessary. * CD-ROM – "The SkyX" – Lets you explore and develop an understanding of basic astronomy. This full featured planetarium software is capable of printing star charts, displaying beautiful astronomical photos, helps you to identify planets and stars, learn the constellations, and much more. Operating Systems: Windows XP and Vista, as well as MAC 10.4.8 and later. * Nylon Carrying Bag for FirstScope Telescope – Pack your FirstScope telescope and accessories in this tote bag for easy and safe transportation.

Woodland Hills Camera & Telescope gave us a FirstScope and Accessory Kit in exchange for a review. Shipping was fast, and the box arrived without damage. After opening the box, I was relieved that no assembly was required, other that attaching a spotting scope and lens. I am usually not that great with assembly (I hate instruction manuals and they are a last resort) but I could almost put this together with my eyes closed. After setting it up, I admired the beautiful scope. The tube is smooth, and it features the names of astronomers that have made significant discoveries in their field. The scope sits on a stand and it turns with ease. To use FirstScope, simply turn the scope in the desired direction. We patiently awaited a clear night. I took the FirstScope out and set it up on a table. The scope is very lightweight! Searching the sky was fun, although we did not use the spotting scope. The table I was using was average height, and the spotting scope was not in the best position. Next time, I will use a higher table or elevate it somehow. For under $70 (for the scope and accessories) you can see Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, a wonderful view of the moon, and more. I was impressed with the clarity, considering the price. FirstScope is a wonderful value. Visit Woodland Hills Camera & Telescope! The staff is knowledgeable and will help you make sense of the technical details! Just tell them what you are looking for and let them guide you.

Back-To-School With 2 Little Stars!

I like clothes that are unique. I am not a fan of picking through the racks at a department store so that my child can look like every other child. I want clothes that have personality and a bit of flair! When I discovered 2 Little Stars for the first time, I was excited to see a page full of new designs, not available anywhere else. I knew that the tee they were making for Logan, in exchange for a review, would be a one of a kind creation. I couldn't wait to receive it!
There was a bit of a wait, and that's good and bad. Good because I know my tee was made to order, and bad because I was overcome with disappointment each time my mailbox was left empty. After it arrived, I unwrapped the package and wanted to squeal with delight! We received the Back Hoe Tee and it is cool enough for Logan to wear without being too grown up! The Back Hoe is made with different fabrics. Each section is embroidered in flawless detail. The playful designs are fun to look at and they hold up well in the wash! No strings or unraveling, and the 100% cotton tee gets softer with each wash!

2 Little Stars has a wonderful variety of products. Shop for newborns, toddlers, older children, and even adults! I was impressed with their assortment of gift sets which are custom made and fit almost any budget. Check them out! Right now, they are having a wonderful sale! Their overhead applique bibs on sale now through Friday. Use coupon code: starbibs at checkout! Be sure to follow 2 Little Stars on facebook and twitter to catch the latest deals and news!

Thanks Lowes. You'll Be Seeing Me Again. In Your Dreams.

Thanks Lowes. I have shopped at your store for years. You have been a long-time favorite. Once a week, I would take a stroll through your aisles, often picking up our necessities and then some. I bought my entire kitchen from you. Granite and maple are not cheap. Nor is the Italian Marble Flooring that I purchased for my bathroom, which we will be putting down when our nightmare is over. You have outfitted our kitchen with all the latest high end appliances. You have given us light and many cool breezes, thanks to our many purchases of light fixtures and ceiling fans. We bought truckloads of plants, trees, shrubs and flowers, all from you so that we could have a beautifully landscaped yard. We even bought our pavers, outdoor furniture, and siding from you. My problem is that I bought more trim boards than I needed. It's better to have too many than not enough, right? Thinking we could return 30 boards was my mistake. The siding we bought was not pristine. There were a few scuffs and a some of the pieces were dirty, but it would be painted anyway so we didn't mind. However, this decision has come back to haunt us. My husband loaded everything up and drove 30 miles to our local Lowes Home Improvement Store to exchange these boards and purchase what we needed. Everything we needed was going to cost more than our return. After taking the boards into the store, the refund was going to be given in the form of a gift card. Perfect! That was the service we expected from Lowes! When the boards were not in their system, a manger was called to look the item up in the system. The Assistant Store Manager arrived to take care of the problem, only he didn't take care of it. He decided that we could not return the few remaining boards because the pieces were not pristine. The Assistant Store Manager did not want to waste his time to look up an item. I guess we are not worth the trouble. The trim that we tried to return was in pretty much the same condition in which it was purchased. It seems they wanted the trim back in even better condition than when they sold it to us! As you can imagine, we are having a hard time putting our home back together. Everything is being paid for out of our own pocket. The first time Lowe's assistant store manager was arrogant, we ignored it. Not this time. I can take my business elsewhere.
Lowes, sure, I'll have withdrawals from shopping in your store. I thought we would have a long term relationship and as your slogan goes, we could build (in our case, rebuild) something (our house) together. Frustrated, my husband returned home and wasted a lot of time, money, and material when he was forced to cut those boards down to size.

The World Is In Your Hands

Recently, I found one of the coolest products ever made! Orbis World Globes is the original creator of photorealistic EarthBalls and giant World Globes. We received a small EarthBall in exchange for this review. Our 16 inch EarthBall was the size of a medium beach ball. It arrives flat, and after blowing it up it was really impressive! It features the latest generation of NASA satellite imagery, with gorgeous colors and beautiful swirling clouds. EarthBalls are the most visually authentic world globes available anywhere in the world. The ball is made of phthalate-free PVC. The EarthBall is not perfectly smooth. It is made of wedges which are fused together. They are well built, and after rough play between my two boys (and myself) I am happy to say that they are still in perfect condition. The colors are stunning and it's nice to see the world from this perspective. Since Logan will be learning more about space this year, this is an ideal learning tool and he will have fun using it. Each EarthBall displays 'NightGlow Cities', which allow you to see the world's cities glowing brightly at night. The "night glow" is slightly rough to touch and I was initially worried that it would rub off over time. It seems to be holding up well. I have washed the ball several times (to test it out!) and it has been used quite a bit. Even with Logan leaning back against it and sitting on it a time or two, the ball has impressed me with it's strength. The NightGlow Cities are a sight to see! It is my favorite feature and I love pointing out the different cities to my children at night. The EarthBall is more challenging than an ordinary globe since nothing is marked. But that's a plus in my book! Every EarthBall comes with the 20 page Global Handbook, chock full of games, activities & informational resources for Earth adventurers of all ages. EarthBall has been fun to have around and considering how well it's made, I think it will be around for quite a while! Check them out! They also offer a massive 1 meter diameter EarthBall! EarthBalls are permanent fixtures at some of the worlds greatest destinations. Orbis also offers custom built giant World Globes! These World Globes are permanent fixtures at some of the worlds greatest destinations. Museums, NASA, libraries and more! With EarthBall, the world is in your hands!

Thumb Wars..The Ugly Ending!

Since this is the back to school series, I am trying really hard to stay on track. This evening, I educated my oldest in the art of colorful language. Words he should never repeat. It happened so quickly. My husband was coming home in a couple of hours. I felt guilty because I really haven't cooked a "meal" in over a week. I'm not great in the kitchen and a few days ago, I started a fire! I do fine with baking, it's the big stuff that causes problems! I wanted to go all out and make this meal special. Since my husband had a rough day, I opted for good old fashioned comfort food. Chicken and Dumplings and all the extras that go along with it! Everything was going well until I picked up a knife and decided to use it. This is where it all begins. My knife in one corner taking on my thumb, the unsuspecting challenger! As soon as I picked up that knife, I sliced my thumb. Not a scratch, I cut INTO my thumb with most of the blade! Blood began to pour and I grabbed a towel to hold pressure. The words flew from my mouth unexpectedly. I rushed Logan and Sam into his room and I turned the stove off and ran outside to finish my rant. Peeling the soaked towel off, I noticed that around the blood, there was "meat" hanging out of the cut. This is where I start to feel sick. I can handle sights like that on other people, just not me! I called my husband at work while I tried to dress and brush a little powder on my face. I even finished dinner, picking up the same stupid knife and slicing into my other thumb. That's it! I am finished. No more knives for me. I wonder how much damage I could do with a butter knife? Hmmm, maybe I don't need to try that either. When my husband arrives, he thinks I need to go to the Emergency Room. I am really starting to get scared now. I hate those places! And I am a big baby when I am injured, I knew if I was going to get stitches and a shot, I would embarrass myself and my husband, who works in the Emergency Room. My wonderful husband called a very special doctor to take a peek at me outside. I could use stitches, but it should heal up without them. It took over two hours for the bleeding to stop. After a prescription for pain meds and antibiotics, I am feeling good. And I may be feeling even better tomorrow! My thumb is wrapped up in a bulky dressing and typing one handed is proving to be a difficult task. My husband may be taking tomorrow off to help me take care of the kids, and maybe hide the knives. He doesn't have to worry about me picking one up anytime soon. Tomorrow should be fun. My thumb is throbbing and it may only get worse. Every time I put pressure on my thumb it opens up. Changing Sam would be a challenge for sure! And this medication I'm taking should make for some interesting reading and posting!

The Real Board Of Education!

When I was a child, I loved chalkboards! Apparently, many children do. They are now made as accessories for playground equipment and they are sold as doodle pads to keep children entertained when they go out! Worthington Direct sent a Porcelain Steel Black Chalkboard by Best-Rite in exchange for this review and my recommendation. After trying it out, I really loved the board. It's so different from the chalkboard I had growing up. I removed the protective plastic sheet that covered the board. After installing the cork and map rail at the top of the board, I was ready to try it out. I used a dustless chalk and scribbled away. The Porcelain Steel Chalkboard by Best-Rite features a new black P3 ceramic steel surface chalkboard that enhances coverage, color contrast and erasability vastly improving the visibility of written material. And it's no joke, chalks really do stand out, even the pale colors that seem to fade out on other boards. The glass hard vitrified porcelain is colorfast and will not fade over time. You will have a crisp black surface for the life of the board. The porcelain surface can be easily cleaned and crayons and foreign substances may be easily removed with scouring powder and water. It is a magnetic board, and it may be used as magnetic bulletin board. It features a factory framed wood trim or anodized aluminum trim. I like the full length rounded -end chalk tray for safety. This board boasts a lifetime performance with a 50 year guarantee! I also found a great organizing system that's great for classrooms and perfect for home! Made from 100% recycled wood fiber, it features cubbies with or without trays. I like it for art supplies and crafting, but I know it would also be great for organizing a child's toys and clothes! Check it out! Worthington Direct is a great site if you are looking for furniture for the classroom, church, school, or home!

Save On Sonlight!

Earlier this week, I filed my intent to homeschool! Logan is so excited and we are ready to begin first grade! Last year, I decided to give homeschooling a try. I researched the subject and made the decision. I was very intimidated at first. The curriculum that I used certainly helped. All of my lesson plans were all laid out, all I had to do was follow along. After I became more comfortable, I could shake things up a bit or go back to our schedule. I am using Sonlight again this year. I purchased the complete box set for first grade. I also purchased a few other products that I plan on adding to our lessons. I think it is the easiest way to begin your homeschool journey. If you do not want a complete boxed curriculum, just purchase what you need! Please note: Sonlight did not pay for this recommendation and they did not send any products for free. Since we are beginning our back to school series, I though this was the perfect way to start things off!
If you are thinking about homeschooling your child/children, please send me an email if I can answer any questions. I am certainly no expert, but I researched it thoroughly before I made my decision. I would be more than happy to help you in any way!
Save $5 off any order of $50 or more at Sonlight by clicking here! Savings will be applied to your first order!

A Scottish Treasure

I have travelled the internet world, always on the lookout for something different and unique. I recently made a stop in Scotland. Oh, my ancestors would be proud! While I was there I discovered Hinnigan, which is based in the Scottish Borders market Town of Selkirk. We received the Pixie Dot Baby Blanket pictured above. It is woven in Scotland from 100% Merino Lambswool. Anyone that reads my blog knows that I adore natural fibers. Your baby will maintain a comfortable temperature wrapped in this Scottish blanket. This exquisite woven blanket is perfect for pampering any new baby boy or girl.
This blanket is a bit thicker than I expected and the colors are very soothing. While I am certainly no expert on the fine art of weaving, this blanket is an heirloom quality treasure that will last generations to come. They offer several baby blanket designs and I would have a hard time picking just one. They arrive in a beautiful white gift box, tied with a ribbon, ready for giving! With reasonable prices, you may be tempted to buy at least two! I'm sure those moms and moms-to-be on your list could use a bit of pampering. I could, so I am putting the Glentress Blanket on my Christmas list!
"The distinctive Hinnigan style is the work of fabric designer Brian Hinnigan and has been inspirational to fashion houses Bill Blass, Paul Costelloe, Ann-Louise Roswald, Eley Kishimoto, Agnes B, Pringle, Matthew Williamson and others. Hinnigan’s export markets include Japan, Korea, Europe and North America." If you are lucky enough to visit Scotland, drop in and say hi! For everyone else, fine Scottish woven wool blankets are only a click away!

My Laundry Room Is Going On A Diet!

A few weeks ago, I tried a new product! Purex Complete, 3-in-1! I was doubtful that it would work. I mean, Purex claims that the sheet contains a full size load of detergent, softener, and anti-static. It's a brilliant idea! Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets are meant to save time and they are better for the environment. So, how did they do? I loaded my washer and dropped a sheet in. I really gave my laundry room a thorough look, wondering how it would look without huge (AND HEAVY!) detergent bottles and fabric softener stacked on the shelves, with an extra supply on the floor. I thought about some of the tasks I wouldn't miss if these laundry sheets worked, such as measuring liquids and cleaning up spills. Not to mention dumping powders all over my floor and getting the vacuum in that tight little room to suck up all that tiny sand-like grit. When it was time to put the load into the dryer, I transferred everything, sheet and all. While I was transferring the clothes, I gave the clothes a close inspection. No stains. So far, so good. I waited patiently for my dryer to complete it's cycle and then I opened it up and began to fold. No zaps from static electricity, and my clothes were soft. Everything had a very mild scent and everything was clean and fresh. Now, I really wish that I hadn't stocked up on those bulky bottles! I am looking forward to using these time saving, environmentally friendly Purex Laundry Sheets! Soon, if you happen to take a peek inside my laundry room, maybe you will notice my new HE washer and dryer, not the endless stacks of heavy plastic bottles! Pick up a starter pack in a store near you, then shop for refills to save money!

I Want My Ma Mi!!!

Years ago, I performed glorious skin peels in a physician's office. I thought that I would never find a facial system that compared to those high dollar treatments. When I received a sample kit from Ma Mi, I put it on the back shelf for a few days. After finishing another product, I dedicated a month to using Ma Mi. It has been one of the greatest months, bringing back that smoothness and clarity that I have only found using the chemical peels of my past. A big advantage is that these products are safe. No toxins or parabens, no fillers, sodium laureth, or petroleums. That's a lot of no-but after using these products, you'll be saying YES! My favorite product, aside from the Revitalize Cleanser, is the Radiant Exfoliator. It's purified water and glycolic acid. Sweep it across your face with gauze (it exfoliates better than cotton) and enjoy the tingle. Afterwards, rinse well with water and enjoy! This program has more than two steps, and for some that might not be ideal. Some busy moms/women are lucky to find time to wash their face. But I urge you to make time and take care of your skin with the complete program. To those that prefer a two step or less process, don't go away empty handed! Grab the Revitalize Cleanser and Radiant Exfoliator. You won't be sorry!

Talking Onesies!!! Babble Babywear! Giveaway!

You can tell a lot about a baby by the clothes they wear. Especially if your baby is wearing Babble Babywear! I received a Fuel onesie, available in 0-6 and 6-12 months, in exchange for a review. It was a little small for Sam, although I did try it on him! The design was fitting. Sam loved his bottle and the image of a bottle turned fuel pump was enough to win us over!
The onesie was made with comfortable 100% combed ringspun cotton with flatlock seams with double-needle ribbed binding on neck, shoulders, sleeves and leg opening. A reinforced three snap closure stayed secure. The onesie is black and it did not fade when I washed it for my review. If you are looking for a little humor, check out "It's 5 AM somewhere" and "Pick-Me-Up" emblazoned over a steaming cup of coffee!
Babble Babywear is giving one US reader the onesie of their choice! To enter, visit their site and let me know your favorite design in a comment! For a second entry, follow them on facebook, and leave a comment afterwards! Anyone that submits an entry (see right side of their website) for the next Babble Babywear onesie may leave three extra comments! This will be confirmed! Giveaway ends midnight, September 1, 2009. Good Luck!

Back To School!

This weekend, I will begin my school/educational series! I have some great items that would be perfect for back-to-school. Many of the items that I will be featuring would be great for Christmas too! Since we are a homeschooling family, my son still has some time before we hit the books. We are excited! Logan's first year (Kindergarten) was a success. I taught him at home on a trial basis. I was very intimidated by the process when I began. After much research, I found a wonderful curriculum that worked for us and now Logan is already begging to begin again. I have my own reasons for homeschooling. I'll admit, it might not be for everyone. Some might not approve. I use a Bible based curriculum, but I do not shield my son from other theories about how we came to be. It is taught, side-by-side, with my own beliefs. God is a part of our daily life. Logan is encouraged to learn more about God and small part of our reading involves Bible stories and devotionals. This would not be possible in a traditional school. One of my main reasons for homeschooling is to put the focus back on the family. In traditional schools, your child is packed onto a bus early in the morning and you may not see your child again until evening. Throw in extracurricular activities and homework, maybe friends and dates on weekends, and how much family time is left? Some might say that homeschooled children do not socialize. It's simply not true. My child is a Cub Scout, attends Bible Study, and he interacts with people of all ages. We are also joining a homeschool group and we will attend weekly meetings. I think society puts too much stress on children. I want my children to be children as long as possible. There is plenty of time for them to grow up. I refused to go out of my way to teach Logan before Kindergarten. If he wanted to know something, we explained it in great detail. He knew the alphabet and numbers, but that was his choice. I made no demands. I let his curiosity lead us. He grew into a very creative little boy. He is always building things. One of his favorite toys is a wooden marble run. He has two different sets and the structures that he builds are simply amazing. I am proud of Logan and all of his accomplishments. I am looking forward to another great year!

Hearing Is Believing

I have always had a baby monitor in the nursery. Better safe than sorry. I like to know the instant my baby wakes, and I'd like to know immediately if my baby ever became distressed. I take my monitor everywhere. When Logan was a baby, I had a hand-me-down monitor that worked just fine. Nothing fancy, but it brought me peace. When Sam was born, I picked up a midlevel monitor made by a popular company. The clarity was pretty good. However, since I have been using it for over a year, it has started acting up. All through the night, my end beeps several times and then silence returns. Not sure why, but it is annoying. I have tried other monitors that feature all the bells and whistles, including video. While video is nice, I found a monitor that makes up for that loss with other great features. After checking it out, I am seriously considering buying my own! (Disclosure: Monitor sent for review and returned. No compensation received for DECT review) The Philips DECT Baby Monitor has made the cut. Philips has built a reputation over the years for being a leader in electronics. I expected a lot from this unit and I wasn't let down. First, they guarantee zero interference from any other device. There is a humidity sensor to help maintain a comfortable climate in addition to a temperature sensor which monitors and keep baby's room healthy. And we all know that a comfortable baby is a happy (or at least happier) baby! The unit uses lights to indicate if your baby makes noise, even with volume off. I also loved the adjustable sound sensitivity function, which allows you to increase/decrease the microphone sensitivity, to enable you to listen to your baby breathe. A vast improvement over regular monitors! The volume is fully adjustable and while listening to your baby, you will have the capability to talk back, soothing your child from any room in the house! I really love the integrated night light and specially selected lullabies that soothe baby to sleep. They are peaceful and relaxing. The only way I see to improve would be to add video or maybe complete intercom/paging capabilities. That would make the DECT monitor ideal for long-term use! It would also make it easier to call your children to dinner when the music is loud!
I did receive a Philips AVENT Natural Feeding Bottle to test and keep. The bottle is made with Polyether Sulphone, a BPA free material. It is a light honey color. The wide mouth bottle that we received arrived with a stage 2 nipple. The nipple features an anti-colic valve that reduces air and prevents vacuum build up. I used glass bottles with my youngest. This was a wonderful option until he began to walk. It was then that we discovered his impressive pitching arm. He could throw a glass bottle with enough force to shatter it and send shards of glass flying everywhere. Not exactly safe for curious babies learning to walk. With Philips AVENT Bottles, no broken glass, and no trips to the emergency room.
I was also sent an AVENT Teether to keep and review. It is phthalate and BPA free. The teether was a stage one teether and meant for front teeth. Since Sam's were already in, I decided to give a limited review based on my observations. Our teether can be sterilized. The teether works by massaging the gums. The ring is completely smooth except for little "bumps" along the ring. Although the teether is firm, I could hold it in one hand and collapse the ring with ease. It would be easy for a baby to hold and the ring is the perfect size for teething.

Do Not Watch In Silence

I hate drama. It seems that my life is full of drama lately. Recently, I really stepped in it. A few days ago, my family was in town for the day. When it was time for lunch, we decided on an affordable buffet style meal at Golden Corral that would make everyone happy. When we paid for our meal, we were informed that there was no ice. The machines were broken, but we didn't mind. After finding a table and sitting down, our waitress promptly brought out a heaping glass of ice. We questioned it, and she smiled and put her finger to her lips as if to say "Shhh." We filled our plates and began to eat. I noticed another woman, all alone, sit at a table in the middle of the room. Every time our waitress refilled our drinks, or anyone else's, she would refill them with ice. When this woman sitting alone requested ice, she was told that they were all out. Meanwhile, another waitress was scooping ice into glasses while this poor woman watched. A few moments passed and the waitress takes a heaping glass of ice to another table. Again, this woman requested ice and was told there was not any. Finally, the waitress relented and took half a glass of ice to the woman's table. Finally, after another conversation with the waitress, she receives a full glass of ice. I became angrier and angrier, unable to finish my meal. It made me sick to watch this take place. I live in the deep south and while it is my personal belief that some people cry discrimination when they don't get what they want, or they get in trouble, I believe it does still exist. Not only with race, but gender and social status as well. I refused to stand by and let this go. I advised management and then I stopped by the kind woman's table to let her know that I had reported it. If I had kept silent, I would be setting a bad example for my children. We left before we could finish our meal. I was overcome with grief. All because of ICE! When you see someone being mistreated for any reason, please do not watch in silence. I don't care if it is a child being yanked out of a store by her hair (let's get real, there's a difference between abuse and discipline) or a child being bullied in the mall. Report it. Sometimes the cries for help are completely silent.

Setting A New Standard For Diaper Bags!

I have a love/hate relationship with diaper bags. I love that most are roomy and I can carry just about anything in them, but I hate that most scream BABY! I don't need a bag that screams baby when I have a real baby capable of doing all the screaming I can handle! And then some! Recently I received The Seattle Zosephine Diaper Bag in exchange for a review. The Zosephine Diaper Bag is definitely classy. The Seattle features a cool blue exterior with gorgeous modern accents. The bag is trim, and there is room for all your baby's needs-along with a few of your own! This bag would go well with just about anything. The shoulder strap is wide enough and it doesn't dig into your shoulder when the bag is full. It is well made and the quality of the materials are impressive..

The diaper bag is constructed with an easy-to-clean nylon lining, plenty of pockets, and a nylon changing pad. A cell phone pocket is hidden under the flap, and a pocket big enough for a small novel can be found on the back. This bag can be used long after your diaper bag days are over! It's the perfect size for a laptop or even a change of clothes and a few essentials! Travel in style, with or without the little ones!

It's always great to support a company with a generous heart! Zosephine donates 10% of sales to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Purchase one and help make a difference!

Summer's Not Over Yet!

video

So this is my first video post! I was recently given the cutest rash guard and swim trunks for Sam. He hasn't made it to the water yet, but he is on his way. As you can see, the suit doesn't restrict my little guy! He moves freely without any restrictions. Except of course the restrictions that I put on him! I love this suit. It's stretchy. I have washed it several times, laying it flat to dry. It looks great not only in the pool, but on the playground as well! LuvGear Children's Wear is not only hip and cool, the SunAlert icon is designed to change color to indicate levels and strength of UV rays. Each top and each bottom feature the SunAlert Patch. When your child is exposed to low levels of UV, the icon shows a sun that appears light pink in color. As the UV rays get stronger, the image becomes a darker shade of red, to warn you that the strength of UV rays have reached levels that may be harmful to a child. I slather on lots of sunscreen when we head outside. But that isn't always enough. With LuvGear, I can relax and allow my children to enjoy the pool and being outdoors! They are available at select JCPenney locations!

Kimberly Parry Organics

When I was pregnant with Sam, I began to hear more about the dangers hidden in products. Switching to glass bottles was easy, but the daunting task of shopping online for the perfect skincare product was not. It took many months for me to settle on a certain brand. Soon after Sam was born, I began blogging and was given many amazing opportunities to try out more products. While I have a few new favorites, no brand has completely won me over as much as Kimberly Parry Organics. Every product that I tried was as great as the next. The products speak to our senses and heal our minds and our bodies. Kimberly Parry Organics has mastered the art of making healing potions.
The first product I fell in love with was Kimberly Parry Organics Soft, Hand and Foot Balm. A word of warning. It's pretty gooey. But this rich goo is heaven on feet and hands. A little goes a very long way. It's slippery and a little oily, so you better take your shower or bath first. It's also perfect for knees and elbows! We were given a sample of Smooth to try as well. Smooth Body Oil is a great nourishing skin conditioner that I used after shaving. It absorbs well. Sure it's pricey, but a bottle will last quite a while. After a few weeks, my bottle hasn't neared the finish line yet. High in Vitamin E and fatty acids, this isn't your ordinary body oil. This splurge is definitely worth it.
Repair Healing Spray has been a lifesaver. I have been working on my house a lot lately and it has been over 100 degrees. I sweat off my sunscreen after a few minutes and my skin is showing the evidence. Repair isn't reversing the hands of time, but it is nursing me back to health. My skin has improved and the remnants of my last sunburn has finally faded. Repair kept me moisturized and soothed the irritation. Belly Butter is another great product. Although I'm not currently expecting, I did try this out as an all-over body balm. I love it. It absorbs completely and lasts. Most lotions/balms that I used when I was expecting were not enough. I hate layering products, but I often needed to. Belly Balm penetrated and left my skin glowing. Even hours later, the product was doing it's job. Bum Butter was the last product that I tried. I use cloth diapers and I need to be careful about which products I use. Bum Butter did not affect my cloth diapers. It washed away completely without staining. But what about my baby's bottom? Sometimes he gets a little irritation. He has never had a full blown rash like my oldest. Bum Butter didn't burn and it seemed to calm everything down. I hate white paste creams. In order to clean those off, you often irritate already traumatized skin. Bum Butter washes off easily and reapplies with ease. I have even used it as an all-over skin treatment before bedtime. This is truly magical stuff! Thank you Kimberly Parry Organics for sending fabulous products for review. It would have been a shame for me to go through life without ever experiencing your products. Your Soft Hand and Foot Balm is my favorite all-time product.

How To Lose A Home In 10 Days...And The Reason I Blog

Just hire the wrong contractor, who will hire the wrong roofers. The list goes on. The pictures that I posted only show some of the damage. Picture what you see in every room. Most of the rooms are much, much worse. But I'll share more over time. This is part of my story, and only a peek inside the life I live. I don't have the luxury of spending time with my children without feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. There are no carefree days, no matter how hard I try. I cannot forget. My anger has diminished, but I am overcome with stress and sorrow. I am lonely. We don't have free time to spend with friends and many friendships have been abandoned. Not intentionally. It is worse for my husband. He is still so angry. He doesn't deserve to be angry. He has helped more people in his life than most. He is a paramedic firefighter, he volunteered at the WTC site for two months, looking for signs of life and then recovering remains for loved ones. After Rita and Katrina, he left us for two months to help those displaced and those left with nearly destroyed homes. I long to see the creases from worry fade into smiles and carefree days.
I recently made a vow to get more personal on my blog. I have really enjoyed my followers and readers. I have enjoyed your entries and comments. I review lots of great stuff, and it is a wonderful escape. It takes my mind off the devastation I face every day. I have not been bought. I only write about products that live up to my standards. There are items that I have tried and you will not see them here. So while it seems all happy and everything is good, it really is. I will never write a false review or recommend anything I would not buy. But why would you believe me? You don't know me. I am going to make an effort to put myself out there and be judged. I have had my wake up call. I am a mommy. I want to be seen as a mommy. Not an ad.
I struggle. I'm not asking for pity. I am blessed. I have a beautiful family and will once again reclaim what was taken. In order for you to understand, I must start at the beginning. It all began on March 1, 2007. Around midnight to be exact. A raging storm brought destruction into the lives of many when an EF-2 tornado landed in our back yard. Neighbors witnessed the funnel cloud touch down on our sun room/screened-in porch. We were home at the time. My husband was asleep, dead to the world on Benadryl because he had an allergic reaction earlier in the day. Logan was lying in bed, wide awake, listening to the winds howl. Being a night owl, I was finishing up a good book in the tub. Lightning was popping and it felt eerie for some reason. As the storm grew worse, I decided to cut my "me time" a bit short. I threw on some comfy PJs and walked through the house. I checked on Logan, which I always do (at least several times!) and noticed he was wide awake. His eyes were so big with fear. I'll never forget...and neither will he. We heard the hail as soon as it started. It was pelting the sides of the house and I was sure the windows would shatter. I was clueless to the dangers...living in the southern tornado alley, I'll never make that mistake again. You think it will never happen to you, until it does. I rushed to wake my husband. He didn't budge until I jumped on him and shook him violently. I yelled at him and told him I was afraid. He was still pretty much asleep and told me to go back to bed. We joke about that now. I heard a horrible noise and looked out the front door. A huge three tier concrete fountain, my first Mother's Day gift, was gone. I screamed at my husband and told him it was no longer standing. I rushed to the back door only to find our enclosed porch also missing. And beyond that, the massive playset (Rainbow King Kong package 3, which was my husband's gift to the family after he spent 2 months away working with FEMA to help those in New Orleans after the hurricanes) was destroyed. About this time, my husband heard trees snapping and falling, which seemed to snap him out of his comatose state. I laid down with Logan while my husband checked things out. No damage inside. We were lucky. Outside was a different story, but we fared better than a few of our neighbors. Later we would find out that this tornado claimed several lives before reaching us. My heart and prayers still go out to those families. After we managed to shove the front door open, the first thing I noticed was the silence.. It was intense and very surreal. Flashlights in hand, we did a quick scan. We realized that aside from personal belongings, only our roofing, siding, a window, and our back sunroom needed replacing. Since my husband is a paramedic/firefighter, he immediately took off to help those in the community after making sure we were okay. A sheriff's deputy made rounds and I was still in shock as I stuttered that we were okay. Alone with my child, I tried calling my parents. They live less than 2 miles away. Unable to reach them, I feared the worst. Calling my grandmother (she lives next to my parents) at two o'clock in the morning, I found out they were all oblivious to our situation. She woke my parents (their phones were out) and my dad began the hour long journey to our house, driving around trees and power lines and other debris. My husband made it home late that afternoon.

You always see the Red Cross on TV, but you never think you will need them. Over the next few days, they delivered water and meals. It took several days for power to return, but we stayed home anyway. Late one night we heard a knock on the door. Our road was closed and we were a bit surprised. We could not find the culprit, and later we heard that looters were knocking on doors. If you didn't answer or turn on a flashlight, they were breaking into homes and taking what they could. We live in a very rural area and I never expected anything like that to happen. I guess it happens everywhere.
A month went by and we began settling with our insurance company, who later refused to renew us. They were not very fair with some of their settlements, but we didn't have lots of money to change their attitude by hiring a lawyer. We moved on with our lives and did our best to find a great contractor. We did find one and we saw several of his projects. The work was immaculate. However, he built a wall for us that fell apart. $2000 spent and a lesson learned. No we did not try to recover losses. We knew that it would cost more to recover that money so we found somebody else. And here our real nightmare begins. Just before we hired this "licensed" contractor, we nailed in the last piece of exotic walnut flooring in our living/dining room and entry. It was gorgeous! I wish I had pictures of our home before this happened. I had lived with pet stained carpet left by the previous owners for a few years, and the carpet had been cleaned so many times, it was rolling in some areas. We had just finished painting, put up new trim, bought new kitchen appliances and renovated our kitchen with granite and maple cabinets. No, we do not have money. It took years of doing things gradually. Our kitchen was put together as we could afford it and it took two years of cooking/cleaning around a work in progress. I am still waiting on one more drawer! The flooring was a gift from my husband's late grandmother. And the appliances were our very first major purchase after months of saving. Oh...we had just bought a new dining room table. The first piece of furniture that we had ever bought. Everything else we owned was handed down. We always seemed to be working, making our once foreclosed and neglected/trashed house, exactly what we wanted. Our dream. Those dreams were smashed when our "contractor" hired "roofers" that thought they could do the job one rainy day. To their credit, it didn't start out that way. I was in the house as I noticed the first leaks. Soon, I would be dodging falling drywall, watching my brand new dining room table get destroyed along with everything else. Almost the entire front half of my house was littered with water and collapsed ceilings. Two days later, the back half of our house was flooded. My kitchen was standing in several inches, new appliances were scratched and dented. Blown in insulation was everywhere. It took 10 days to lose our home. We moved out and began making temporary repairs to keep the water out. We thought the roofers insurance would repair our home. Our roof was covered with a bright blue tarp for more than a year. I am still finding pieces of it. If I ever see another blue tarp, it will be too soon. Two and a half years later, we are still displaced and taking as much as possible from each paycheck to put our house back together. My husband has spent many days on the roof in the hot Georgia sun rolling out roofing and tarring the seams. Yep, that's mold below. Nasty stuff. (But is is now gone!)
Below is a picture of our house the night before we moved out. I wish I had a better picture. This picture was taken before our "contractor" removed the siding and left the front covered with wood and a little bit of house wrap (which tore and shredded every time it was windy), took our savings and decided not to come back. Oh..he took our boat too and decided it was his to sell. Funny that it was never signed over to him. I'm still wondering how he did it. We tried to file a police report, but since this guy was our contractor and we were trading the boat for a fireplace which was never built, the officers refused to talk to us and would not allow us to file a report. They said it was civil. Our house was uninsurable so we had forced insurance. We paid $664 a year on insurance before this happened. After we were dropped and took forced insurance, we had to pay more than $800 a month. We save every penny because it takes it (and more) to live. How much more can we take? My youngest has never been to the home we worked so hard for. My oldest talks about "the white house" and doesn't have the memories of growing up there. He only sees the state it's in. Insulation piled as high as the doors and no ceilings or walls. I am not sure how we held our family together. Even with prayer, it has been tough. Two and a half years later, we still have dreams of living in our home again soon. We spend every day off and every vacation working on our home, hauling debris, throwing out ruined belongings, and bagging drywall. My dad and my mom have been a huge help. My dear brother too. We also have a wonderful friend that has put in a lot of time and my husband's co-workers have helped immensely. We owe them so much. This past week, I spent my days laying in the attic sucking up insulation with a shop vac. If you've ever wondered about some of my recent absences, this is why. I'm getting too old for this. This is not fair. Will we ever catch a break? I'll let you know how it goes. To be continued...
