This Old Fashioned Fudge Takes Me Back!

I love fudge and I would be as big as a house if I could make it. For some reason, I can't. Candy thermometers scare me. I have burned too many pots of chocolate and brittle because I think I can stop whisking for just a moment or two. I guess I am under the impression that if you don't stir cool air into your pot by constantly whisking, the temperature will rise faster and I can enjoy it (and stop whisking!) more quickly.  Even microwave fudge, which is supposed to be fool-proof can be ruined when I make it. Besides, microwave fudge will never be as good as fudge made the old fashioned way. When Theresa, the lovely candy maker from Terri's Sweet Treats Shop on Etsy, offered to make fudge for our very special baby shower I was THRILLED! I usually get fudge only at Christmas. This was a treat! The fudge arrived during our hottest month and it was in perfect condition. No gooey mess, just perfect old fashioned fudge in an assortment of flavors. Some of the flavors were not what I would have ordered, but I was excited to try them.
We received Rich Chocolate Fudge, which was one of my favorites. It had a richness that couldn't be beat. It was the perfect consistency and it melted in my mouth. It was creamy and smooth and it really made me remember the holidays of my youth. It's so rare that a simple bite of candy can overwhelm me with warm and fuzzy feelings! I also tried White Chocolate Pecan. I don't really like white chocolate, but this was really good. The pecans were very rich and buttery and I liked the combination of flavors.
The Maple Cashew was a flavor I dreaded trying. I don't really like full strength maple anything, and I was afraid this would be too much. It wasn't. It was milder than the old fashioned maple candy my mom let me try as a child. She loved that stuff and so did my grandmother, who always tried to give me a piece! There I go with my fond memories again! This fudge really takes me back to some of my sweetest moments! Chocolate Peppermint Stick was my favorite, hands down! It wasn't overly minty, and I didn't get peppermint stuck in my teeth, which I hate. I swear, I could eat buckets of it and never get tired of it. It is the perfect holiday fudge! I think it's also the perfect anytime fudge!
The Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge was a classic combination. It was the perfect amount of peanut bitter and it didn't overtake the chocolate. That kind of harmony doesn't happen that often. Terri's Sweet Treats Shop has perfected it! The Dark Chocolate Orange was okay, but I don't like chocolate and oranges together. At all! The fact that I could take a bite and not be grossed out says something (positive) and if you like the chocolate citrus combination like Logan (my oldest) does, then you will  (most likely) love every bite. I only took a nibble, so I can't honestly give you all the details, but Logan really thought it was wonderful. Terri's Sweet Treats Shop offers a creative assortment of flavors that are sure to give even the pickiest person those warm and fuzzy feelings I was talking about. You will either be reminded of something wonderful or you'll make new memories when the fudge takes you (and your tastebuds) to a special place. I think you'll get lucky and experience both!
Disclosure: I was sent an assortment of fudge to serve at a very special baby shower. No monetary compensation received.

Impress Your Guests!

I had ZERO experience with chocolate fountains when I hosted our recent baby shower. I have a fountain that I have only used to make cheese fondue (spicy cheddar jack cheese IS awesome) but I wanted to serve my favorite treat in a special way! Sephra sent us an elegant chocolate fountain which was the perfect size for our gathering. They also sent THE most delicious chocolate (for melting) that I've ever had. It was silky smooth chocolate, and it didn't taste waxy like a few other chocolate melts that I have used when making candy or cake pops. It was rich and melted smoothly. I melted it in the bag and then poured it into the fountain, which my eight year old assembled. It was so easy! T'he fountain was made very well and it was stable. I didn't worry about anyone tipping it over.
The motor was surprisingly quiet and I had no problem getting it started. When I poured my chocolate in, I turned the unit off and on once or twice to "prime" it and this made the chocolate cascade more evenly. I didn't have to add oil to my chocolate either because it was ready to use! I had marshmallows, chips, pretzels, strawberries, pineapple, and bananas close by for dipping. I had plenty of bamboo skewers too! Next time I use my fountain I will try cubes of pound cake, kiwi, cherries, and assorted cookies! I love all the options you can offer your guests! We had plenty of sweet and salty treats! Of course, I would have been happy just using a straw! The fountain was beautiful to look at and it didn't splatter. The chocolate had a wonderful sheen and I think every guest went for the fountain first! It really attracted us all and it was fun to use! It also made the room smell like chocolate, which was a great bonus!!!The unit was pretty and it would have looked great a a casual picnic or an elegant reception. You can use the fountain to serve chocolate, cheese, fruit purees, caramels, ranch, BBQ sauce, and various other sauces. I wonder if a mulled wine at Christmas is a possibility? I may have to try it and let you know. It would keep it warm and it would be nice to look at! The tower (with the tiers) is clear, so you  could serve more transparent sauces without worrying about the color peeking through!
just getting started!
I was a little worried about cleaning it. I've heard they were a nightmare!!! I was surprised at how easy it was to clean. My husband carried it to the sink after I unplugged it and I removed the "tower" which comes off in sections. I poured the chocolate while it was still warm into a bag and I sealed it. Next, I wiped it out with a paper towel and then used the sprayer on my faucet to rinse the (very smooth) stainless portion of the bowl while leaning it over the sink. I washed it with a soapy sponge and sprayed again. I used my sprayer to get into all the little areas my sponge wouldn't reach. I had no problems getting all the chocolate out and the entire fountain was clean within five minutes. The tower was cleaned just as easily as the base! When I received my Sephra fountain, I thought it would only be a special occasion treat. After cleaning it, I would bring it out anytime! Leftover chocolate can be immediately poured into molds or saved. I saved my chocolate but I did heat some up later to use in molds. I also mixed some with nuts and made a few chocolate nut clusters! I found it easy to work with! Let me warn you about the mess though. It wasn't that bad. I served mine on a table that had an off white rug under it. I had a few drips (which cleaned up easily) so you may want to set this up in the kitchen or over an easy to clean surface! I highly recommend this fountain because of it's ease of cleaning and quiet motor. It was fun to use and the chocolate was AWESOME! Their prices are great and they offer everything from chocolate, fountains, and accessories to decadent gourmet mixes! Their Belgian Dark Mousse Kit would make a great hostess gift for the holidays! It looks amazing! Check them out!

Magical Whimsy

I never knew how much I could love pretty paper! I am the type of person that searches for the prettiest wrapping paper, cards, and stationary I can find. I don't scrapbook and I am not a very crafty person. I never really thought about all the things that could be made with paper. When I found Magical Whimsy on Etsy, I discovered so many beautiful things!
Denise is the talented artist behind the name and she has a knack for taking paper (pretty or plain) and melting your heart. I supplied the colors and theme and waited patiently to see the creations! Denise sent us an assortment of paper creations for our special baby shower. My favorite item? A name banner featuring the name of a very special baby! This banner was made using cutouts, layered to make perfect alphabet cards for each letter of the baby's name with a beautiful butterfly on each end. The butterfly wings could be folded back to add some dimension to the banner! The "letters" were all tied together with shimmering pink ribbon! I hung the banner from my mantle and placed all the gifts below. The banner now has a special place in the baby's nursery! We also received a few butterflies to use in centerpieces. I used one in the chocolate pop display shown above!
We were sent cupcake toppers and cupcake wrappers. I have never used wrappers, and after using them, I hope I am never without them! I made cupcakes with and without wrappers so you could see the difference. The plain baking cups do not stand out. The wrappers really made my cupcakes more beautiful and they were so easy to put together! The cupcake toppers were perfect and made my cupcakes coordinate with my garden theme. I used clear favor cupcake containers (so guests could also take a cupcake home) and I punched a hole in each top for the "lollipop stick" to pass through. The butterflies and flowers were double sided, so they looked great from any angle.
We also received a gorgeous shimmering butterfly mobile topped with pretty shimmering ribbons. The butterflies had beads between them to reflect the light and add some glitz and glam to baby's room! Paper butterflies fluttered with each breeze (ceiling fans and walking by sent them dancing!) and I could imagine a baby gazing up at them, mesmerized by their graceful movement! Magical Whimsy can create magic for your baby's room. Check her out on Etsy!
Disclosure: I was sent these items for a special shower. Items were necessary to provide accurate reviews and were given to our guest of honor at the shower. Honest opinions were given. No monetary compensation received.

Win A Parent's Choice Prize Package!

I received a great package in the mail! It contained 12.9 oz can of Parent’s Choice Premium, 12.4 oz can of Parent’s Choice Advantage, two $3.00 off coupons for Parent’s Choice Infant Formula (redeemable at all Walmart stores), and a Parent’s Choice Starter Set – a complete nurser system that includes a variety of bottles, nipples, liners, leak proof caps and retainer rings! In the US, all infant formulas are subject to the same regulations for manufacture and ingredients required for the growth of healthy babies under the Infant Formula Act. Store brand formulas sold at major retailers are a premium national substitute at a value price and meet the same FDA nutritional requirements as all of the major brands. The quality and safety of the manufacturing of infant formulas are also inspected by the FDA in the same way!

Galaxy Desserts!

I am always looking for beautiful desserts to serve at dinner parties or other events, like a recent baby shower I hosted. When searching, I am looking for inspiration for my own dishes. I love to bake! Some things are a little out of my comfort zone, like the gorgeous desserts from Galaxy Desserts! Galaxy Desserts sent me enough Mousse Duos to serve and they also sent a couple of sampler boxes so I could try their oh so delicious pastries!!!

We were given the opportunity to try the Double Chocolate and their Raspberry Mousse Duos. My favorite? Double Chocolate Mousse Duos!!! They had three layers of some of the most decadent chocolate I've had. The bottom of each cup had a layer of rich dark chocolate mousse topped with a fluffy layer of milk chocolate mousse. Each shot of insanely rich chocolate was topped with white chocolate shavings! It wasn't so sweet it left you feeling sick afterwards, which was wonderful! I could seriously do shots all day long. The dessert itself didn't sit heavy on my stomach. I really enjoyed each bite and I wanted more! The Raspberry Lemon Mousse Duos were not as popular (I guess I know a lot of chocoholics) but they were really good! They tasted like they were made with real fruit! The tangy lemon complimented the sweet raspberry. It was a refreshing combination!
A few days before the party, I heated up my sampler box of pastries. They were such a treat! The mini butter croissants were crisp on the outside and soft and flaky inside. My tastebuds were blown away! The butter is intense and the pastry seemed to melt in my mouth. I didn't think it could get any better, but it did! The mini chocolate croissants are divine! I love chocolate and I love pastry. Combine the two and I am in trouble! Thankfully, these are minis, so I couldn't overdo it! I only wish they would make full size or supersize! The mini morning buns were devoured by Logan and Sam. I did take a small little bite, but I still had chocolate on my mind (and in my mouth) but I can tell you they were delicious! If you are planning a party or if you are like me, and enjoy pretty desserts, buy them all before I do! check out  Galaxy Desserts! Some of their desserts may look dainty, but they certainly pack a flavorful punch!

Galaxy Desserts is offering a tasty giveaway to my readers. One lucky reader will win an amazing prize pack! Look for the details soon!
Disclosure: Mousse Duos were provided for our shower and sampler boxes were provided for personal use in order to complete this review. Future giveaway also provided by Galaxy Desserts. DonFelix: Custom Couture!

I love baby clothes, especially clothes for baby girls. While I don't have a little girl of my own, I can't help myself when I pass by a rack of tiny dresses. I always stop and look! As a mom of two boys, I can tell you, cute baby clothes for boys are hard to find. Girl clothes? I haven't heard anyone complain about a shortage of cute clothing. The question is, where do you shop? Check out DonFelix on Etsy. Owner Beverly is a master with needle and thread and she can transform cute fabric into darling creations! She sent the outfit pictured above for a very special couple expecting their first child! When I opened the package, I thought of Shirley Temple and old fashioned porcelain dolls. It doesn't get any better! I looked at all the seams and handiwork and marveled at the perfection. Everything was finished beautifully and attention was paid to all the little details. I loved this gorgeous set and I was impressed by the quality. DonFelix also offers gorgeous creations for moms and big girls! Check out DonFelix on Etsy. You won't be disappointed!

The Wacky Cookie Company: The Coolest Cookie Award!

We had a few different cookies at our recent baby shower. The coolest had to be our Sevillanas (Spanish Ladybug) Cookies from The Wacky Cookie Company! These cookies not only looked great, they were incredibly delicious too! The ladybugs were made using a red edible glitter that gave these cookies a beautiful sparkle.I thought I would be overwhelmed by a red dye flavor since the cookies are so bright and rich. I wasn't. The royal icing was AMAZING! The cookies had a wonderful, buttery flavor and they melted in my mouth! They were one of the most delicious decorated cookies I've tried so far and while a little pricey, you can tell a lot of love and effort went into making each cookie perfect! They all arrived in perfect condition and they were beautifully gift boxed. If ladybugs aren't your thing, check out the other spectacular designs! I still can't believe they are edible! The Wacky Cookie Company also offers other treats including cupcakes, cake pops, and hand poured lollipops! Check them out!

Our Blue Bunny Girl's Night!

I love ice cream, and I love parties! When I was given the opportunity to host a girl's night with Blue Bunny Ice Cream for the season finale of The Bachlorette, how could I resist? We tried Chocolate & Salted Caramel Personals! It sounded amazing when I read about it. I wasn't disappointed when I tasted it. It's the perfect combination of sweet and salty! The personals are individual servings and they feature a spoon under the lid! I liked not having to scoop the ice cream, which always seems to be a little messy. These little personals are great portion control sizes and they contained enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. The chocolate was dark and rich and the caramel ribbon was smooth and a little salty. We enjoyed our girl's night and we really enjoyed our sweet treat from Blue Bunny! Blue Bunny has always been one of my favorites. I try to schedule a girl's night once every week or two. Usually, we have popcorn, but after trying these Blue Bunny Personals, that will change! They are perfect snacks for our get togethers! Check them out! They come in great flavors that are hard to resist!

The Cake: IcingCrafters.com!

I love icing. I usually make my own, preferring my buttercream and chocolate icing to those that come in a can. When I found out I would be hosting a baby shower, I knew I had a lot of work to do and not a lot of time. I needed something quick and easy and I couldn't afford to make the mess that usually accompanies my homemade buttercream!
IcingCrafters.com sent me an assortment of icings for our cake and cupcake favors. The night before the shower, I opened them up! I received Mango, Lemongrass Ginger, and Strawberry Balsamic for the cupcakes and traditional Chocolate and Vanilla Buttercreme for the cake. I also received Rose flavored icing to use as an accent!
I NEVER would have ordered the flavored icings sent. I know what I like and I usually play it safe. I was hesitant to even taste the flavored icings. I like strawberry, but balsamic? Not so much. It didn't sound good at all. Mango? I hate mangoes! Rose sounded interesting and it was one of my requests. I tasted the chocolate and vanilla first. The chocolate had a rich cocoa flavor that I adored! The vanilla was similar in taste to my own buttercream. The icings were sweet, but not overly so. They were smooth and creamy and fluffed with little effort.
The Mango was my favorite as soon as I tasted it! It was packed with flavor and my husband said it wasn't like eating mango candy, more like eating an actual mango! The Strawberry Balsamic was next. When I tasted it, I knew this was my new favorite!!! Sound familiar? I think I liked the Strawberry Balsamic more than the Mango, but it's really hard to tell for sure. It tasted like a slightly tangy strawberry! It was amazing, and I could eat it straight from the jar. Forget the cupcakes!!! The Lemongrass Ginger was also great flavor. It wasn't my favorite, but it was delicious and very light and refreshing. The Rose Icing tasted just like you would think a rose should taste. It was quite powerful in flavor and you probably wouldn't want to frost a cake or cupcake with it. It was perfect for our icing roses, and it complimented the Vanilla Buttercreme beautifully! The icings sold at IcingCrafters.com are affordable and you can eliminate the mess associated with making your own. They taste better than store bought (in my opinion) and the choice of flavors is awesome!!! They last 4-6 months unopened and they can be stored at room temperature. Opened, they can last up to 6 weeks! I have sworn off other icings after tasting these. For the price, and amount you receive, it's worth it to buy from them. And I don't think I will be able to recreate that Mango (which made me forget my love of chocolate) or Strawberry Balsamic (which made me forget everything else)...IcingCrafters.com has ruined me for other icings. I will always compare others to them, and I seriously don't think others would stand a chance. Is it even possible for me to do this icing justice with a review? I don't think I have the words.
Disclosure: I was sent an assortment of icings for this review. Only honest opinions were given.

The Cake: Edible Butterflies!

CakesByChristi, owner of Etsy site Miss Cupcake Canada, sent me a flurry of edible butterflies to use on our baby shower cake! I requested purple, dusted with shimmer dust. When they arrived, I marveled at the detail on each! I put them away, anxious for the morning of the shower so I could finally use them on the cake! Each butterfly is edible, made of wafer paper and edible inks. They arrive flat. I creased each one to make the butterflies appear more life-like. I applied a dab of icing to each and placed them on the cake. I loved using them and I loved that they were so simple to use! They are perfect for cakes and cupcakes, but you could also use them on cookies or other desserts too! They do not spoil, but she recommends using them within 4-6 months. The butterflies really made my cake even more beautiful. I received lots of compliments and several thought our cake was just a decoration! It was almost too pretty to eat! Visit her site and check out her other edible creations!
Disclosure: I was sent a package of butterflies in order to complete this review.

The Cake: The Sweetest Edible Topper!

When I found out I would be hosting a baby shower, I turned to Etsy for inspiration. For those of you who haven't heard of Etsy, it's a treasure trove of the greatest handmade items ever created. At least that's my opinion! I have always found the coolest products and sellers there and I haven't ever been disappointed. When I was looking for cake toppers on Etsy, I discovered Alla Prima Designs!
She sent me the sweetest edible cake topper I've ever seen! It was created just for me, with the colors I requested. It's delicate, but it survived shipping and it arrived in perfect condition. This topper can also be used as a keepsake if stored in a dry place, although the colors will fade over time. The night before the shower, my cousin came over to help me prepare. We had so much fun baking and decorating our cake! We made a two tiered cake and put the topper in place. It was darling, and we couldn't wait for our guests to arrive!
Each petal was hand painted and you could tell a lot of time (and love) went into making this piece. The adorable baby had golden hair and rounded cheeks. She had so many details that made her so realistic! When our guests arrived, they couldn't believe the cake was real! It was almost too pretty to eat!
Everyone ooohed and ahhhed over the topper and I knew it couldn't have been more perfect! This wonderful seller donates her time and many of her hand crafted items to STARRY- a program that supports single mothers in desperate situations in Round Rock, TX. Check her out and order a whimsical sugarcraft creation for your next party!

After that, I decide on colors and then CAKE! I love cake, and I think it's important for any event, big or small! We will start at the top (of the cake) and I will post on my awesome topper, then I will tell you about the cool edible accessories I used. Lastly, the icing!!!! I hope you enjoy and find some inspiration for your next cake!

St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum

When we visited St. Augustine, we checked out their new Pirate & Treasure Museum. I didn't know what to expect since I hadn't read any reviews online. We entered through the gift shop and showed our passes at the counter. We were given stickers and a treasure map! We were told about Discovery Drawers throughout the museum and it was our job to find them. When we began our self guided tour, we took our time wandering through the museum. There were so many things to see and there were interactive stations for us to enjoy! The museum is rich with history and the numerous relics and reproductions kept our kids entertained. At one point, we found ourselves in a dark room lined with benches and headphones. We listened intently with the headphones covering our ears (Sam did get scared because of the loud noises and complete darkness) and enjoyed the "show" while relaxing in the cool room. There were several rooms, so even on a busy day, there wouldn't be a long wait! Logan and Sam fired guns and cannons and they learned a lot when they found the Discovery Drawers! The multisensory experience allowed us to feel, smell, hear, and see through the eyes of pirates of the Golden Age! We touched real treasure and Logan and Sam took turns at the ship's wheel! When we finished our tour, we turned in our map. Logan and Sam each received a special prize! The St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum was my favorite attraction in St. Augustine. I loved it so much, I would definitely make it a part of future trips to St. Augustine. It's the kind of place you can see again and again, and you will probably see something you missed before or learn something new (and spectacular!)each time. It was a real treat for the family!
Disclosure: We were given passes to enjoy the museum. No monetary compensation received.
